The Memory of the Arab World Project’s Second Executive
Committee Meeting and the Conference on the Digitization
of Arab Heritage in the Syrian capital of Damascus. |

| The three-day event was co-organized
by Egypt’s the Egyptian Ministry of Communication
& Information Technology, the sponsor of the Memory of the Arab
World project, the General Commission for the Festival of Damascus, Capital of Arab Culture 2008; Tarim Center for
Architecture and Heritage in Syria and Center for Documentation
of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT), a Bibliotheca
Alexandria affiliate. The Conference on the Digitization
of Arab Heritage discussed digitization issues, highlighted Arab efforts and initiatives in this domain & promoted the role of libraries in the documentation of
literary heritage. The Egyptian high-level delegation
headed by Senior Advisor to Egypt’s Minister of Communications
and Information Technology Dr. Hoda Baraka and CULTNAT
Director Dr. Fathi Saleh were actively involved
in the event. |

The Euro-Mediterranean Information Society (EUMEDIS) Conference |

The Final EUMEDIS International Conference convened at Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt) under the auspices of MCIT.
Project representatives, policymakers & journalists from the Mediterranean region
participated in debates, workshops & presentations covering the objectives of developing Information Society in the Mediterranean
region. |

Digitizing the Memory of the Arab World: A Framework for Cooperation: Cairo |

The event was attended by representatives from UNESCO, ISESCO, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Royal Jordanian
Documentation Center, The Royal Bureau for Culture in
Oman, Al-Fuqan Foundation for Islamic Heritage in England and professors from universities and institutes along with
researchers from Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine, Syrian,
Yemen, Civil Society, NGO’s, representatives of media,
Academic and other professionals interested in ICT and
heritage conservation.
The event focused on issues pertaining to the efforts being made to
digitize and document the Memory of the Arab World with
its diverse manifestations, be it tangible or intangible,
Digitizing Arab Heritage within the context of ICT and
sustainable development relying on ICT, and last but not
least, defining priorities for the Arab World Heritage
issues.
A protocol was signed, between CULTNAT
(represented by Dr. Fathi Saleh) and the Royal Jordanian
Heritage Center (represented by Mr. Mohammad Al-Edwan),
as an outcome of the workshop. |
