Memory of the Arab World Conference and Meeting, Damascus, Syria 26-28 May 08


In the framework of the 'Memory of the Arab World',a project aiming to preserve the Arab heritage in all its tangible and intangible forms using the latest information technology, a joint event is held on May 26th to the 28th in Damascus, Syria, both for the 'Second Executive Committee Meeting' of the project; and for the 'Conference on the Digitization of Arab Heritage'. This three-day event is co-organized by the General Commission for the Festival of Damascus: Capital of Arab Culture 2008, Tarim Center for Architecture and Heritage in Syria, and the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, CULTNAT, affiliated to Bibliotheca Alexandrina and supported by the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, that is sponsoring and financing the 'Memory of the Arab World' project. Representatives from the UNESCO, ISESCO and the Arab Union for Electronic Publishing, are also attending the event from Egypt, in addition to a number of researchers and specialists.

Egypt's high level delegation is headed by Dr. Hoda Baraka, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Dr. Fathi Saleh, Director of CULTNAT. The delegation also includes Dr. Saber Arab, Chairman of the National Library and Archives of Egypt, Dr. Ahmed Morsy, President of the Association for the Preservation of the Folkloric Heritage, Dr. Sohair Wastawy, Head of the Library Sector at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Dr. Reem Bahgat, Deputy Director of CULTNAT, and Dr. Heba Barakat, 'Memory of the Arab World' Project Manager.

The 'Conference on the Digitization of Arab Heritage' aims to discuss digitization issues, to highlight Arab efforts and state initiatives in this objective, to promote the role of libraries in the documentation of the literary heritage, and to underline the role of information technology in that field.

The 'Second Executive Committee Meeting' of 'Memory of the Arab World' project will discuss the progress of the project document, to set a cooperation mechanism between the Arab organizations, centers and institutions involved with heritage. The meeting will also summarize the achievements carried out since the signature of the Al-Sharjah Announcement: the official agreement regulating the project, attained and approved during the first meeting held in Al-Sharjah, in the U.A.E. in October 2007.

The 'Memory of the Arab World' project aims to activate a regional Arab cooperation to publish information on the region's heritage on a portal entitled 'Memory of the Arab World', and to promote previous initiatives of digitization. Each country's role is to collect and digitize its heritage in all its tangible and intangible forms, while CULTNAT is entrusted to set the various working standards, to train the specialists from all participating countries on the use and the application of these standards, and to develop the bilingual (Arabic and English) portal.

The 'Memory of the Arab World' is a leading project in the field of tangible and intangible heritage documentation, in the region. It is the first Arab project aiming to digitize the Arab heritage and aiming to preserve its memory to pass it on to future generations.
