The Series of Lectures: The Egyptian Civilization Timeline Episode Ten: “Byzantine Period”
Delivered by: Dr. Khaled Gharib, Head of the Greek and Roman Antiquities Department at the Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University
The Byzantine era is a distinct cultural period in Egypt, and can be considered a cultural extension that resisted the Roman conqueror. It began to rely on symbolism to develop the Egyptian civilization, taking on rituals and celebrations as its guide.
The truth is that the Coptic stage started before 284 AD, when Mark the Apostle came to Egypt in the mid-first century, where he entered Alexandria and met Pope Anianus. Then, Christianity spread all across Egypt marking a new distinct cultural stage.
